Corinth Plantation of Grenada records
Collection
Identifier: Am-Mss-Corinth
Scope and Contents
The Corinth Plantation of Grenada records include legal documents, inventories, and correspondence regarding the ownership and income of a sugar plantation in the West Indies. Extensive lists of property, including slaves, are present in several items. Some items in the collection are in French, reflecting continued French ownership and business interest in Grenada during the period of British colonization.
The documents demonstrate the separation between property owners and property occupiers, showing that a lease on the ownership of the plantation, which granted the right to collect rent from the occupier, was distinct from a lease granting the right to physically occupy, manage, and profit from the plantation's products.
