Scope and Contents

The Dustin Griffin papers primarily document Griffin's activities as a Williams College alumus. Griffin served on the Williams College Society of Alumni Executive Committee from 1985-1986 and was chair of the Alumni Trustee Nomination Committee from 2004-2005. The papers pertain to these committees and numerous Williams College Class of 1965 reunions including their organization, fund raising and financing, attendance, and memorial services. Also included in the collection is Williams College 1993 Bicentennial celebration documentation as Griffin was Chairman of the Williams College Bicentennial Commission from 1989-1994. The Dustin Griffin papers include correspondence, photographs, reports, promotional flyers, invitations, cards, notes, memoirs, linen samples, and meeting minutes. The collection dates from 1980 to 2016.

Biographical / Historical

Dustin H. Griffin graduated summa cum laude from Williams College in 1965 with a B.A. in English. While at Williams he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society, a Junior Advisor, President of the Gargoyle Society, and played Varsity Track. In 1967 he received his M.A. from Oxford University with first class honours in English language and literature. He went on to receive his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1969. Griffin traveled to California to serve as Assistant Professor of English at the University of California from 1969-1976. From California to New York, Griffin joined New York University as Associate Professor of English from 1976-1983 and then Professor of English from 1983-2009. He is Professor of English Emeritus at New York University. In 2011 he began serving as the Margaret Bundy Scott Visiting Professor of English at Williams. Griffin is the author of numerous books, essays and articles published over the course of his career.

He has continued his commitment to Williams College in various degrees including as the Class of 1965 President from 1980-1990 and again starting in 2010 and continues in that role. He served as Vice-President of his class from 2005-2010. He was also Chair of the 40th Reunion from 2004-2005. He was a member of the Executive Committee for the Williams College Society of Alumni from 1985-1986 and Chairman of the Williams College Bicentennial Commission from 1989-1994. He was the New Jersey co-chair for the Williams College Third Century Campaign from 1990-1993 and Chair of the Alumni Trustee Nomination Committee from 2004-2005. He also served as a member of the Williams College Board of Trustees from 1986-2001.
