Scope and Contents

Comprising papers and materials, maintained by the Secretary of the Board, the Williams College Board of Trustees Records, 1789-current, provide documentation of the decision-making processes of this body and governance at Williams.

Conditions Governing Access

The following policy governs the access and use of the Williams College Board of Trustees Records. The policy was adopted in 1991.

The Williams College Board of Trustees Records are closed to all prospective readers for 50 years from date of creation with the exception of the President of the College and the Secretary to the Board of Trustees.

The Williams College Board of Trustees Records that are 50 years or older from date of creation will be available to Williams College faculty and staff upon request. Williams College students and alumni as well as researchers with no Williams affiliation who wish to access records older than 50 years from the date of creation may be considered upon written request to the Records Manager and final approval from the Secretary to the Board of Trustees.

Conditions Governing Use

In consultation with Special Collections staff, reproductions of unrestricted materials may be made upon request.

Organized into four series: I. Trustee Meetings Files, II. Trustee Personal Files, III. Faculty/Staff Files, IV. Miscellaneous.

Library Shelving Facility, L2 Storage, and the digital preservation server.

Custodial History

Prior to their transfer to the Archives in 1989, the records of the Secretary of the Board of Trustees were housed in a number of different locations. Born-Digital files are trasnferred at creation to the Records Manager.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Transferred to the Records Manager in accordance to the Policy Governing College Records by the Secretary to the Board of Trustees.

Processing Information

A portion of the records were processed by Mary Mollica and S. Kennick, 1989-90. Previously records were intellectually accessed through an inventory produced by the office of the Vice President for Administration/Treasurer. (See the Accession File for this original listing.) Once in the Archives, the records were organized, pulling together like sections of material into unified series. Conservation and organization of this collection were partially funded by the office of the Vice President for Administration. Board of Trustees minutes and associated records are collected and preserved in born-digital format by Records Manager, 2012-current.
