Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The William and Louise Scoville series include the papers of Armstrong's eldest daughter by his first marriage, and her husband. Correspondence is filled with news of family and friends, health, travel and personal matters. A series of letters from William to Louise, while William worked at the Hampton Institute, provide references to Hampton affairs but are chiefly concerned with personal and financial matters. Louise's journals and manuscripts are narratives of her travels to the British Isles and Europe, summer cruises, reminiscences, essays and short stories. Also included is a journal that Louise kept jointly with her sister Edith during a trip to Hawaii with their father in 1891. A four volume memorial to Louise's mother by Mary Anne Longstreth entitled: "Recollections of Emma Walker Armstrong..." is a handwritten narrative of Emma and Samuel Armstrong's lives throughout their friendship with Ms. Longstreth. Miscellaneous and published materials include poetry, magazines, programs, pamphlets and articles.
